Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan Overview

The purpose of this lesson plan is to introduce thermal energy and heat and the three ways thermal energy can be transferred: conduction, convection, and radiation. Each day begins with a brief time of introduction. Day one begins with a video recorded activity done by the teacher. Then the lesson is taught and thermal energy and conduction are introduced. The students then have time to break into small groups and do the experiment that the teacher began class with. Each student will be assessed for the day on his/her written observation and explanation of the activity. Day two begins with a time of review and a Bill Nye the Science Guy video. Then the lesson on convection is taught. Students then have the opportunity to break into groups again and do another hands-on activity that will demonstrate convection through colored ice cubes and hot water. A daily assessment will again be taken based on their observations and explanations of the activity. Day three involves taking a trip outside where students will review days one and two and then be taught about radiation. The sun will be the main focus in teaching this lesson. After returning inside students will break into small groups and experience another type of radiation, the microwave. Day four would be a review day and day five would be test day, however these are not included in this lesson plan. Sample questions for an exam are attached at the end of the lesson plan.
